The Fires of August

“War is the father of all,” said Heraclitus, and this August, the centennial of the outbreak of the First World War, offers a fitting occasion to reflect upon his dark idea. With it in mind, and to commemorate those events of August 1914, these pieces of largely sombre music may also help to sharpen one’s ears for the sounds of “the fire next time.”
